"B" Camshaft Position - Actuator Circuit (Bank 2)

Code P0023 means the PCM has detected an electrical fault in the "B" camshaft position actuator circuit on Bank 2 — the circuit controlling the exhaust cam oil control valve solenoid on Bank 2. This is the Bank 2 exhaust cam electrical equivalent of P0013. The PCM has detected an open, short to ground, or short to voltage in this circuit.

Schedule a repair soon — this issue will worsen and may cause additional damage if ignored.

What You Might Notice

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle
  • Reduced power
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Cold-start stumble

Most Common Causes

  1. 1

Faulty Bank 2 exhaust cam OCV solenoid

The solenoid has an open or shorted coil. Measure resistance and replace if outside the 6–12 ohm typical spec.

  2. 2

Open or short in Bank 2 exhaust OCV wiring

A broken wire or short in the harness between PCM and the Bank 2 exhaust solenoid sets this code.

  3. 3

Corroded Bank 2 exhaust OCV connector

Moisture in the connector causes intermittent circuit faults. Inspect and clean before replacing the solenoid.

  4. 4

    Low or dirty oil

Sludge causes the solenoid to draw excess current, leading to circuit faults. Always change oil with solenoid replacement.

How to Diagnose It

  1. 1

  4. 4

Check Low or dirty oilSludge causes the solenoid to draw excess current, leading to circuit faults. Always change oil with solenoid replacement.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

    Change engine oil and filter

Clean oil prevents immediate re-failure of any replacement solenoid.

  2. 2

Inspect Bank 2 exhaust OCV connector and harness

Check for corrosion and harness damage near the Bank 2 valve cover.

  3. 3

    Test solenoid resistance

Disconnect and measure — replace if open, shorted, or out of spec.

  4. 4

Replace Bank 2 exhaust cam OCV solenoid

Install OEM or quality replacement, clean bore, and torque to spec.

  5. 5

    Clear codes and verify

Clear DTCs and confirm normal Bank 2 exhaust cam circuit operation with a scanner.
