Downstream Oxygen Sensors Swapped From Bank To Bank

Code P0041 means the PCM has detected that the downstream oxygen sensor signals for Bank 1 and Bank 2 (Sensor 2 — post-catalyst) appear to be swapped. The downstream sensors monitor catalyst efficiency for each bank; if they are reading from the wrong banks, catalyst monitor data will be corrupted. The cause is virtually always physical sensor or connector swapping during a previous repair.

Schedule a repair soon — this issue will worsen and may cause additional damage if ignored.

What You Might Notice

  • Check engine light on
  • Incorrect catalyst efficiency readings for each bank
  • Failed emissions test
  • May be set after downstream O2 sensor replacement or exhaust work

Most Common Causes

  1. 1

Downstream sensors installed on wrong banks

Bank 1 and Bank 2 downstream sensors were physically swapped during replacement or exhaust work.

  2. 2

    Downstream sensor harness connectors crossed

The harness connectors for the downstream sensors were reconnected to the wrong sensors.

How to Diagnose It

  1. 1

Check Downstream sensors installed on wrong banksBank 1 and Bank 2 downstream sensors were physically swapped during replacement or exhaust work.

  2. 2

Check Downstream sensor harness connectors crossedThe harness connectors for the downstream sensors were reconnected to the wrong sensors.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Verify downstream sensor positions on each bank

Physically trace each downstream sensor and its connector. Bank 1 Sensor 2 must be downstream of the Bank 1 catalytic converter.

  2. 2

    Correct crossed harness connectors

Reconnect the downstream sensor connectors to the matching sensors on each bank.

  3. 3

Clear codes and run catalyst monitors

After correcting sensor positions, clear DTCs and run the catalyst efficiency monitors to verify each bank reports correctly.
