HO2S Heater Resistance (Bank 2, Sensor 2)
The oxygen sensor heater circuit for Bank 2 Sensor 2 (downstream O2 sensor) is not operating properly. This prevents the sensor from reaching optimal operating temperature quickly, affecting fuel mixture control during cold start and emissions performance.
What You Might Notice
- Delayed engine startup or hard cold starts
- Diminished fuel efficiency
- Black smoke from exhaust during cold start
- Check engine light illuminated
- Rough idle during warm-up period
Most Common Causes
- 1
Faulty O2 sensor heater element
The heating element inside the oxygen sensor has failed or become resistant, preventing proper sensor warm-up and operation.
- 2
Broken or corroded wiring harness
The electrical connector or wiring to the downstream O2 sensor heater circuit is damaged, corroded, or disconnected, preventing power delivery.
- 3
Faulty power control relay or module
The relay or control module responsible for switching power to the heater circuit has failed or is malfunctioning.
- 4
Engine control module (ECM) issue
The ECM may have a software fault or hardware defect preventing it from controlling the O2 sensor heater circuit.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Faulty O2 sensor heater element — The heating element inside the oxygen sensor has failed or become resistant, preventing proper sensor warm-up and operation.
- 2
Check Broken or corroded wiring harness — The electrical connector or wiring to the downstream O2 sensor heater circuit is damaged, corroded, or disconnected, preventing power delivery.
- 3
Check Faulty power control relay or module — The relay or control module responsible for switching power to the heater circuit has failed or is malfunctioning.
- 4
Check Engine control module (ECM) issue — The ECM may have a software fault or hardware defect preventing it from controlling the O2 sensor heater circuit.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace Bank 2 Sensor 2 oxygen sensor
Remove and replace the downstream oxygen sensor on Bank 2 (opposite side of engine from cylinder 1) with a new sensor that has a functional heater element.
- 2
Repair or replace oxygen sensor wiring harness
Inspect the wiring connector and harness leading to the downstream O2 sensor for corrosion, damage, or loose connections. Repair or replace as needed and ensure proper seating of the connector.
- 3
Test and replace heater relay or module
Use a multimeter to test the O2 sensor heater control relay or module for continuity and proper voltage output. Replace if faulty.
- 4
Clear code and retest system
After completing repairs, clear the DTC using an OBD-II scanner and perform a test drive in various conditions to verify the code does not return and sensor heater is functioning properly.
