Cylinder 9 Injector Circuit Low
P0285 indicates that the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 9 is operating at a lower voltage or amperage than the PCM expects. This causes the injector to spray less fuel into that cylinder, creating a lean mixture that triggers the oxygen sensor to signal the PCM to compensate by enriching all cylinders, degrading fuel economy and engine performance.
What You Might Notice
- Check engine light illuminated with P0285 code set
- Engine runs rough or misfires, especially under load
- Noticeable loss of engine power and acceleration
- Significant decrease in fuel economy
- Potential hesitation or stumbling during throttle application
Most Common Causes
- 1
Dirty or clogged fuel injector
Carbon buildup in the injector reduces spray pattern and fuel delivery, causing the circuit to draw insufficient current and triggering the low-circuit code.
- 2
Faulty fuel injector
The injector solenoid coil may be failing or have high resistance, preventing proper operation and causing the PCM to detect abnormal voltage or current.
- 3
Wiring or connector issue
Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring and connectors at the cylinder 9 injector can cause poor electrical connection and voltage drop across the circuit.
- 4
PCM fuel injector driver fault
The power control module's internal driver circuit that controls cylinder 9's injector may be malfunctioning or failing.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Dirty or clogged fuel injector — Carbon buildup in the injector reduces spray pattern and fuel delivery, causing the circuit to draw insufficient current and triggering the low-circuit code.
- 2
Check Faulty fuel injector — The injector solenoid coil may be failing or have high resistance, preventing proper operation and causing the PCM to detect abnormal voltage or current.
- 3
Check Wiring or connector issue — Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring and connectors at the cylinder 9 injector can cause poor electrical connection and voltage drop across the circuit.
- 4
Check PCM fuel injector driver fault — The power control module's internal driver circuit that controls cylinder 9's injector may be malfunctioning or failing.
How to Fix It
- 1
Clean fuel injectors
Use fuel system cleaner or have the injectors professionally cleaned to remove carbon deposits. Start with this lower-cost solution before replacing components.
- 2
Inspect and repair wiring and connectors
Inspect the injector wiring harness and connector for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage. Clean corroded connectors with electrical contact cleaner and ensure tight connections.
- 3
Replace fuel injector
If cleaning and connector repairs do not resolve the code, replace the cylinder 9 fuel injector with an OEM or quality aftermarket equivalent.
- 4
Test and replace PCM if necessary
If all injector-related components test normal, have the PCM tested for internal driver circuit failure. This is a rare cause but may require PCM reprogramming or replacement.
