Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1)
The PCM detected an out-of-range or inconsistent signal from the camshaft position sensor circuit. This sensor tells the engine computer the exact position of the camshaft to properly time fuel injection and ignition, so a faulty signal degrades engine performance and drivability.
What You Might Notice
- Engine runs rough or misfires
- Poor fuel economy
- Difficulty starting or no-start condition
- Check engine light illuminated
- Engine may enter limp-home mode with reduced power
Most Common Causes
- 1
Faulty camshaft position sensor
The sensor itself has failed electrically or mechanically and no longer produces a valid signal. This is the most common cause of this code.
- 2
Wiring interference or damage
Cam sensor wiring routed too close to spark plug wires or ignition coils causing electromagnetic interference, or damaged/shorted wiring in the sensor circuit.
- 3
Poor electrical connections
Corroded, loose, or improperly seated connectors at the camshaft position sensor or related circuits prevent proper signal transmission to the PCM.
- 4
Timing belt/chain problems
A worn or skipped timing belt/chain can cause the camshaft to be out of synchronization with the crankshaft, creating an out-of-range sensor signal.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Faulty camshaft position sensor — The sensor itself has failed electrically or mechanically and no longer produces a valid signal. This is the most common cause of this code.
- 2
Check Wiring interference or damage — Cam sensor wiring routed too close to spark plug wires or ignition coils causing electromagnetic interference, or damaged/shorted wiring in the sensor circuit.
- 3
Check Poor electrical connections — Corroded, loose, or improperly seated connectors at the camshaft position sensor or related circuits prevent proper signal transmission to the PCM.
- 4
Check Timing belt/chain problems — A worn or skipped timing belt/chain can cause the camshaft to be out of synchronization with the crankshaft, creating an out-of-range sensor signal.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace camshaft position sensor
Remove the faulty sensor from its mounting location and install a new OEM or quality replacement. Reconnect the wiring harness and clear the code.
- 2
Inspect and repair wiring
Check the camshaft sensor wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or improper routing near ignition components. Reroute away from high-voltage wires and repair or replace damaged wiring as needed.
- 3
Clean or replace electrical connectors
Disconnect the camshaft sensor connector and inspect for corrosion or debris. Clean with electrical contact cleaner or replace the connector if damaged. Ensure all pins are making solid contact.
- 4
Inspect timing belt/chain and synchronization
If sensor replacement and wiring checks don't resolve the code, inspect the timing belt/chain for wear or damage and verify camshaft-to-crankshaft timing alignment per service manual specifications.
