Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1)
The PCM detected that the camshaft position sensor B signal is out of the expected range or performing abnormally on Bank 1. This sensor helps the engine computer optimize fuel injection and ignition timing based on actual cam position. The engine may enter limp-home mode and run poorly until repaired.
What You Might Notice
- Check engine light illuminated
- Poor fuel economy
- Difficulty starting or no-start condition
- Rough idle or hesitation during acceleration
- Engine running in limp-home mode with reduced power
Most Common Causes
- 1
Wiring interference or routing issue
Camshaft sensor wiring routed too close to spark plug wires or ignition components causes electromagnetic interference that corrupts the sensor signal.
- 2
Poor electrical connections
Corroded, loose, or damaged connectors at the camshaft sensor or wiring harness prevent proper signal transmission to the PCM.
- 3
Failing camshaft position sensor B
The sensor itself is degrading or has failed, producing an out-of-range signal that the PCM cannot interpret correctly.
- 4
Wiring harness damage
Broken, pinched, or shorted wiring between the camshaft sensor and PCM disrupts signal integrity.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Wiring interference or routing issue — Camshaft sensor wiring routed too close to spark plug wires or ignition components causes electromagnetic interference that corrupts the sensor signal.
- 2
Check Poor electrical connections — Corroded, loose, or damaged connectors at the camshaft sensor or wiring harness prevent proper signal transmission to the PCM.
- 3
Check Failing camshaft position sensor B — The sensor itself is degrading or has failed, producing an out-of-range signal that the PCM cannot interpret correctly.
- 4
Check Wiring harness damage — Broken, pinched, or shorted wiring between the camshaft sensor and PCM disrupts signal integrity.
How to Fix It
- 1
Inspect and reroute sensor wiring
Check that camshaft sensor B wiring is not routed near spark plug wires, ignition coils, or high-voltage components. Reroute away from interference sources and secure with appropriate clips.
- 2
Clean and check electrical connectors
Disconnect the camshaft sensor B connector and inspect for corrosion or damage. Clean contacts with dielectric grease and reconnect firmly to ensure good electrical contact.
- 3
Replace camshaft position sensor B
If wiring and connections are sound, the sensor has likely failed. Remove the old sensor and install a new OEM or quality aftermarket camshaft position sensor for Bank 1.
- 4
Repair damaged wiring harness
If wiring is broken or severely damaged, repair or replace the affected wiring section or entire harness between the sensor and PCM.
