Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit Malfunction
The PCM has detected a malfunction in the Check Engine Light (MIL) control circuit. This code sets when the electrical circuit controlling the MIL cannot operate properly, preventing the light from illuminating when needed or causing it to stay on continuously.
What You Might Notice
- Check Engine Light not illuminating when key is on
- Check Engine Light stays on continuously
- Service Engine Soon light malfunctioning
- No MIL response during bulb check
- Dashboard warning light circuit failure
Most Common Causes
- 1
Burned out MIL bulb or LED
The Check Engine Light bulb or LED element has failed and no longer illuminates. This is the most common cause of P0650 codes.
- 2
MIL wiring short or open circuit
The electrical wiring harness controlling the MIL has an open (broken) or short circuit condition, preventing proper voltage delivery to the bulb.
- 3
Poor electrical connection at bulb or cluster
A loose, corroded, or oxidized connector at the MIL bulb socket or instrument cluster prevents adequate electrical contact and current flow.
- 4
Failed PCM or control module
The Powertrain Control Module has an internal fault in the circuit that controls MIL output, though this is a less common cause than wiring or bulb issues.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Burned out MIL bulb or LED — The Check Engine Light bulb or LED element has failed and no longer illuminates. This is the most common cause of P0650 codes.
- 2
Check MIL wiring short or open circuit — The electrical wiring harness controlling the MIL has an open (broken) or short circuit condition, preventing proper voltage delivery to the bulb.
- 3
Check Poor electrical connection at bulb or cluster — A loose, corroded, or oxidized connector at the MIL bulb socket or instrument cluster prevents adequate electrical contact and current flow.
- 4
Check Failed PCM or control module — The Powertrain Control Module has an internal fault in the circuit that controls MIL output, though this is a less common cause than wiring or bulb issues.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace MIL bulb or LED
Remove the instrument cluster or access the bulb from behind the dashboard and replace the burned-out Check Engine Light bulb with the correct replacement.
- 2
Inspect and repair MIL wiring
Visually inspect the wiring harness from the PCM to the MIL bulb for breaks, chafing, or damage. Repair or replace damaged wire segments and retest.
- 3
Clean and secure electrical connections
Locate the bulb socket and cluster connectors related to the MIL circuit. Clean any corrosion from terminals, ensure all connectors are fully seated, and apply dielectric grease.
- 4
Test and replace PCM if needed
Use a diagnostic scanner to confirm MIL circuit voltage at the PCM output. If voltage is present but bulb does not illuminate and wiring is good, the PCM may need replacement or programming.
