Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit Malfunction
The transmission fluid temperature sensor circuit is not sending a valid signal to the PCM. This sensor monitors transmission fluid temperature to optimize shift timing and torque converter operation. Without accurate readings, the transmission may shift harshly, delay shifts, or operate inefficiently.
What You Might Notice
- Check engine light illuminated
- Harsh or delayed gear shifts
- Improper torque converter clutch operation
- Transmission overheating
- Reduced fuel economy
Most Common Causes
- 1
Faulty transmission fluid temperature sensor
The sensor has failed electrically or mechanically and cannot accurately measure fluid temperature. This is the most common cause of P0710.
- 2
Wiring problems or corroded connectors
Damaged wires, poor connections, or corrosion in the sensor circuit prevent proper signal transmission to the PCM.
- 3
Transmission fluid level or condition issues
Low transmission fluid level or degraded fluid quality can affect sensor operation and transmission performance.
- 4
Faulty PCM or module communications fault
The powertrain control module may have failed or lost communication with the transmission control module, preventing proper sensor signal processing.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Faulty transmission fluid temperature sensor — The sensor has failed electrically or mechanically and cannot accurately measure fluid temperature. This is the most common cause of P0710.
- 2
Check Wiring problems or corroded connectors — Damaged wires, poor connections, or corrosion in the sensor circuit prevent proper signal transmission to the PCM.
- 3
Check Transmission fluid level or condition issues — Low transmission fluid level or degraded fluid quality can affect sensor operation and transmission performance.
- 4
Check Faulty PCM or module communications fault — The powertrain control module may have failed or lost communication with the transmission control module, preventing proper sensor signal processing.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace transmission fluid temperature sensor
Locate the sensor on the transmission housing, disconnect the wiring harness, remove the old sensor, and install a new OEM or quality aftermarket sensor. Clear the code after replacement.
- 2
Inspect and repair wiring and connectors
Check the sensor circuit wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Repair or replace damaged wires and clean corroded connectors with electrical contact cleaner.
- 3
Check and top off transmission fluid
Verify transmission fluid level using the dipstick and top off if low. Inspect fluid color and condition; if dark or burnt-smelling, schedule a transmission fluid and filter service.
- 4
Scan for additional codes and PCM issues
Use a diagnostic scanner to check for related transmission codes or PCM faults. If multiple transmission codes are present, consult a transmission specialist for deeper diagnosis.
