1-2 Shift Malfunction
P0781 indicates the transmission control module detected a malfunction during a 1-2 gear shift. The transmission may fail to shift properly from first to second gear, potentially causing the vehicle to enter a failsafe mode with limited gear selection.
What You Might Notice
- Check engine light illuminated
- Transmission will not shift from 1st to 2nd gear
- Transmission stuck in one gear (limp mode/failsafe mode)
- Delayed or harsh shifting
- Reduced vehicle performance and acceleration
Most Common Causes
- 1
Low or dirty transmission fluid
Insufficient fluid level or degraded fluid reduces hydraulic pressure needed for proper shift operation. Check fluid condition and level first.
- 2
Solenoid malfunction
Shift solenoids control hydraulic pressure for gear changes. A faulty or stuck solenoid will prevent proper 1-2 gear engagement.
- 3
Transmission control module (TCM) fault
Electrical issues or software faults in the TCM prevent proper shift commands from being sent to hydraulic systems.
- 4
Wiring or connector issues
Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring harnesses and connectors can interrupt shift solenoid signals and sensor communication.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Low or dirty transmission fluid — Insufficient fluid level or degraded fluid reduces hydraulic pressure needed for proper shift operation. Check fluid condition and level first.
- 2

Check Wiring or connector issues — Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring harnesses and connectors can interrupt shift solenoid signals and sensor communication.
How to Fix It
- 1
Check and service transmission fluid
Inspect transmission fluid level and condition. Top off or perform complete fluid and filter change if fluid is dark, burnt-smelling, or low.
- 2
Inspect and test shift solenoids
Remove and test 1-2 shift solenoid for electrical continuity and proper operation. Replace if solenoid is stuck, damaged, or fails electrical testing.
- 3
Inspect wiring and connectors
Check TCM wiring harness and solenoid connectors for corrosion, loose pins, or damage. Clean corroded connectors or repair damaged wiring as needed.
- 4
Reprogram or replace TCM
If electrical connections are good, the TCM may need software reprogramming by a dealer or require replacement if hardware is faulty.
