Transfer Case Control System (MIL Request)
P0800 indicates the transmission control or transfer case control system has requested the malfunction indicator light (MIL) to illuminate due to an electrical or mechanical failure. The PCM has detected a serious malfunction in the transmission/transfer case control system that requires prompt diagnosis and repair.
What You Might Notice
- Flashing or constantly illuminated 4WD indicator light
- Unable to shift between 2WD and 4WD modes
- Inability to switch between transfer case gear ranges
- Check engine light or transmission warning light illuminated
- Unusual noises from transfer case or driveshaft
Most Common Causes
- 1
Faulty transfer case control module
The transfer case control module may have failed electrically or mechanically, preventing proper communication with the PCM.
- 2
4WD switch malfunction
The 4WD engagement switch may be defective or not sending proper signals to the control system, preventing mode switching.
- 3
Wiring or connector issues
Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring and connectors in the transfer case control circuit can disrupt system communication.
- 4
Internal transfer case failure
Mechanical damage or failure inside the transfer case itself may prevent proper engagement of 4WD components.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Faulty transfer case control module — The transfer case control module may have failed electrically or mechanically, preventing proper communication with the PCM.
- 2
Check 4WD switch malfunction — The 4WD engagement switch may be defective or not sending proper signals to the control system, preventing mode switching.
- 3
Check Wiring or connector issues — Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring and connectors in the transfer case control circuit can disrupt system communication.
- 4
Check Internal transfer case failure — Mechanical damage or failure inside the transfer case itself may prevent proper engagement of 4WD components.
How to Fix It
- 1
Inspect and test 4WD switch
Test the 4WD switch with a multimeter to verify it sends correct signals. Replace if faulty or not responding to mode selection.
- 2
Check transfer case wiring and connectors
Inspect all wiring harnesses and connectors related to the transfer case control system for corrosion, damage, or loose connections. Clean and reseat connectors or replace damaged wiring.
- 3
Test or replace transfer case control module
Use a diagnostic scanner to verify the module communicates with the PCM. If communication fails, the module may need replacement.
- 4
Inspect transfer case for mechanical damage
If electrical components check out, the transfer case may require internal inspection or replacement due to mechanical failure of engagement components.
