Clutch Position Sensor Circuit
P0805 indicates a problem with the clutch position sensor circuit, which monitors the engagement state of the clutch pedal. This code sets when the PCM detects an electrical fault, open circuit, short circuit, or signal outside expected parameters from the clutch position sensor.
What You Might Notice
- Engine will not start or has difficulty starting
- Motor starts without requiring clutch pedal engagement
- Transmission warning light illuminated on dashboard
- Check engine light (MIL) illuminated
- Difficulty shifting gears or transmission stuck in gear
Most Common Causes
- 1
Defective clutch position sensor
The sensor itself may be failing, producing incorrect signals or no signal at all. This is the most common cause of P0805.
- 2
Damaged or corroded wiring and connectors
Wiring harness breaks, corrosion, or loose connections between the sensor and PCM can interrupt the signal circuit.
- 3
Faulty PCM or TCM control module
The powertrain or transmission control module may have internal faults preventing proper sensor signal interpretation.
- 4
Loose or corroded ground strap connection
Poor grounding of the sensor circuit can cause signal corruption or voltage reference problems.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Defective clutch position sensor — The sensor itself may be failing, producing incorrect signals or no signal at all. This is the most common cause of P0805.
- 2
Check Damaged or corroded wiring and connectors — Wiring harness breaks, corrosion, or loose connections between the sensor and PCM can interrupt the signal circuit.
- 3
Check Faulty PCM or TCM control module — The powertrain or transmission control module may have internal faults preventing proper sensor signal interpretation.
- 4
Check Loose or corroded ground strap connection — Poor grounding of the sensor circuit can cause signal corruption or voltage reference problems.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace clutch position sensor
Remove the defective sensor from the clutch pedal assembly and install a new OEM or quality aftermarket sensor, then clear the code and test.
- 2
Inspect and repair wiring harness
Check the sensor wiring from the clutch pedal to the PCM for breaks, corrosion, or loose connections. Repair or replace damaged sections as needed.
- 3
Clean or replace connectors
Disconnect and inspect the sensor connector for corrosion or damage. Clean with electrical contact cleaner or replace the connector terminal set if severely corroded.
- 4
Check ground strap and PCM connections
Verify the clutch sensor ground strap is tight and corrosion-free. Test PCM power and ground connections; replace PCM if internal faults are confirmed.
