Clutch Pedal Switch "A" Circuit Low
P0831 indicates the clutch pedal position sensor switch circuit is reading a low voltage signal. This sensor tells the engine control module whether the clutch pedal is engaged or disengaged, and a low signal means the PCM cannot properly detect clutch pedal position.
What You Might Notice
- Engine will not start or is difficult to start
- Engine starts without requiring clutch pedal depression
- Check Engine Light illuminated
- Transmission will not shift properly
- Vehicle may not engage reverse or other gears
Most Common Causes
- 1
Faulty clutch pedal position sensor
The sensor switch itself has failed or is defective, preventing proper signal transmission to the PCM.
- 2
Corroded or damaged connector
The connector between the sensor and wiring harness has corrosion, loose pins, or physical damage reducing electrical contact.
- 3
Damaged or faulty wiring
The circuit wiring between the sensor and PCM has breaks, shorts, or insulation damage causing low voltage.
- 4
Blown fuse or fuseable link
The circuit fuse has blown or the fuseable link is open, cutting power to the clutch sensor circuit.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Faulty clutch pedal position sensor — The sensor switch itself has failed or is defective, preventing proper signal transmission to the PCM.
- 2
Check Corroded or damaged connector — The connector between the sensor and wiring harness has corrosion, loose pins, or physical damage reducing electrical contact.
- 3
Check Damaged or faulty wiring — The circuit wiring between the sensor and PCM has breaks, shorts, or insulation damage causing low voltage.
- 4
Check Blown fuse or fuseable link — The circuit fuse has blown or the fuseable link is open, cutting power to the clutch sensor circuit.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace clutch pedal position sensor
Remove the faulty sensor from under the dash near the clutch pedal and install a new OEM or quality replacement sensor.
- 2
Inspect and repair connector
Disconnect the sensor connector, clean any corrosion with electrical contact cleaner, check for loose or damaged pins, and reconnect firmly or replace connector if damaged.
- 3
Repair or replace wiring harness
Trace the clutch sensor circuit wiring for breaks, shorts, or damage. Repair damaged sections with proper splicing techniques or replace entire harness if severely compromised.
- 4
Replace blown fuse
Locate the clutch sensor fuse in the fuse panel using the vehicle manual, and replace with a new fuse of the same amperage rating.
