Transmission Component Slipping

P0894 indicates the transmission is slipping due to worn friction material on clutch discs or other internal transmission components. When the PCM detects slippage exceeding safe parameters, this code sets. Continued driving risks complete transmission failure and loss of vehicle control.

Stop driving immediately — continuing to drive may cause serious engine or safety damage.

What You Might Notice

  • Transmission slipping or loss of power during acceleration
  • Delayed and/or harsh gear engagement
  • Erratic or unpredictable transmission shift patterns
  • Strong burnt smell from transmission fluid
  • Engine revving without corresponding vehicle acceleration

Most Common Causes

  1. 1

    Worn clutch discs

Friction material on one or more clutch discs has worn thin, reducing grip and causing slippage during gear engagement.

  2. 2

    Degraded transmission fluid

Low fluid level, burnt fluid, or contaminated fluid reduces lubrication and friction material effectiveness in the transmission.

  3. 3

    Internal transmission component wear

Worn bands, broken teeth on gears, or damaged friction plates prevent proper torque transfer and gear ratio engagement.

  4. 4

    Transmission solenoid or valve failure

Electrical or mechanical failure in shift solenoids or pressure control valves prevents proper fluid routing and clutch application.

How to Diagnose It

  1. 1

Check Worn clutch discsFriction material on one or more clutch discs has worn thin, reducing grip and causing slippage during gear engagement.

  2. 2

Check Degraded transmission fluidLow fluid level, burnt fluid, or contaminated fluid reduces lubrication and friction material effectiveness in the transmission.

  3. 3

Check Internal transmission component wearWorn bands, broken teeth on gears, or damaged friction plates prevent proper torque transfer and gear ratio engagement.

  4. 4

Check Transmission solenoid or valve failureElectrical or mechanical failure in shift solenoids or pressure control valves prevents proper fluid routing and clutch application.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

    Change transmission fluid and filter

Drain old, burnt transmission fluid and replace with fresh fluid and new filter to restore lubrication and friction properties. Check fluid condition before service.

  2. 2

    Inspect and replace clutch discs

Remove transmission and visually inspect clutch discs for wear. Replace worn friction discs and steel plates as needed to restore proper grip and engagement.

  3. 3

    Test and replace transmission solenoids

Test shift solenoids with multimeter for electrical continuity and proper resistance values. Replace any solenoids that fail testing or show signs of corrosion.

  4. 4

Perform full transmission rebuild or replacement

If internal damage is extensive or slipping persists after fluid and solenoid service, transmission must be professionally rebuilt or replaced to restore functionality.
