Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open
The throttle actuator control system is stuck in the open position, causing the PCM to enter failsafe mode and restrict engine operation. The engine may not start, run only at idle, or exhibit severe drivability issues due to inability to control throttle position properly.
What You Might Notice
- Engine will not start or difficult to start
- Little or no throttle response when pressing accelerator
- Poor engine performance that may worsen over time
- Check Engine Light illuminated
- Smoke or unusual exhaust from tailpipe
- Increased fuel consumption
Most Common Causes
- 1
Throttle actuator motor failure
The electric motor controlling the throttle plate has failed or is stuck in the open position, preventing proper throttle regulation.
- 2
Throttle body mechanical sticking
Carbon buildup or debris inside the throttle body has caused the throttle plate to stick open, blocking normal airflow control.
- 3
Wiring or connector issues to throttle actuator
Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring harness connections to the throttle actuator motor prevent proper electrical control signals.
- 4
PCM or throttle control module malfunction
The powertrain control module or dedicated throttle control module has failed or contains corrupted programming.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Throttle actuator motor failure — The electric motor controlling the throttle plate has failed or is stuck in the open position, preventing proper throttle regulation.
- 2
Check Throttle body mechanical sticking — Carbon buildup or debris inside the throttle body has caused the throttle plate to stick open, blocking normal airflow control.
- 3
Check Wiring or connector issues to throttle actuator — Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring harness connections to the throttle actuator motor prevent proper electrical control signals.
- 4
Check PCM or throttle control module malfunction — The powertrain control module or dedicated throttle control module has failed or contains corrupted programming.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace throttle actuator motor
Remove and replace the faulty throttle actuator motor assembly that controls the throttle position. This is the most common fix for this code.
- 2
Clean or replace throttle body
Remove the throttle body and thoroughly clean carbon and debris deposits, or replace if internal damage is found. Ensure the throttle plate moves freely.
- 3
Inspect and repair throttle actuator wiring
Check all wiring harnesses and connectors connected to the throttle actuator for corrosion, damage, or loose connections. Repair or replace damaged wiring as needed.
- 4
Reprogram or replace PCM
Have the PCM reflashed with updated throttle control programming, or replace the PCM module if it is determined to be faulty.
