Injector Control Pressure Too Low - Engine Cranking
P2291 indicates the engine's fuel injection system pressure is too low during cranking, preventing proper fuel delivery to cylinders. This code is triggered when the high-pressure fuel injection system fails to build adequate pressure needed to start and run the engine.
What You Might Notice
- No start condition or difficulty starting
- Excessive white or black smoke from exhaust
- Unusual knocking or rattling noises from engine compartment
- Rough idle when engine does start
- Loss of power under acceleration
Most Common Causes
- 1
Low oil level
Insufficient engine oil reduces pressure throughout the engine and fuel injection system. Check dipstick and top up to proper level immediately.
- 2
Defective high-pressure injection pressure switch
A faulty pressure switch fails to signal adequate fuel pressure to the engine control module. The switch may be stuck, damaged, or have failed internally.
- 3
Open or shorted control circuits
Wiring harness damage, corroded connectors, or broken circuits between the pressure switch and ECM prevent proper pressure signal transmission.
- 4
Low oil pressure
Worn engine bearings, faulty oil pump, or clogged oil filter restrict oil flow and pressure needed for the fuel injection system to function properly.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Low oil level — Insufficient engine oil reduces pressure throughout the engine and fuel injection system. Check dipstick and top up to proper level immediately.
- 2
Check Defective high-pressure injection pressure switch — A faulty pressure switch fails to signal adequate fuel pressure to the engine control module. The switch may be stuck, damaged, or have failed internally.
- 3
Check Open or shorted control circuits — Wiring harness damage, corroded connectors, or broken circuits between the pressure switch and ECM prevent proper pressure signal transmission.
- 4
Check Low oil pressure — Worn engine bearings, faulty oil pump, or clogged oil filter restrict oil flow and pressure needed for the fuel injection system to function properly.
How to Fix It
- 1
Check and top off engine oil
Verify engine oil level using the dipstick and add manufacturer-specified oil to reach proper level between minimum and maximum marks. Retest after correcting level.
- 2
Test fuel injection pressure manually
Use a fuel pressure gauge connected to the injection system test point to verify actual pressure meets manufacturer specifications during cranking. Compare readings to service manual values.
- 3
Replace high-pressure injection pressure switch
Locate the pressure switch on the fuel injection system, disconnect the electrical connector, unscrew the old switch, and install the new OEM or equivalent switch. Torque to specification and clear the code.
- 4
Inspect and repair wiring and connectors
Examine all wiring harnesses and connectors between the pressure switch and ECM for corrosion, breaks, or loose connections. Clean corroded contacts with electrical cleaner or replace damaged sections of wire.
