Secondary Air Injection System Air Flow/Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic Bank 2
The secondary air injection system on Bank 2 is experiencing intermittent or erratic airflow/pressure sensor readings. This system injects fresh air into the exhaust to reduce emissions, and the sensor detects proper system function; when readings become unstable, the PCM cannot verify correct operation.
What You Might Notice
- Check engine light illuminated
- Engine stalling at idle
- Difficulty starting the engine
- Secondary air injection pump making noise or grinding sounds
- Reduced engine performance or hesitation during acceleration
Most Common Causes
- 1
Faulty air pressure sensor
The secondary air pressure sensor on Bank 2 is sending intermittent or erratic signal readings to the PCM, causing the system to appear dysfunctional even if airflow is normal.
- 2
Defective secondary air injection pump
The air pump is failing intermittently, causing inconsistent airflow that the sensor detects as erratic pressure fluctuations.
- 3
Faulty one-way check valve
A stuck or malfunctioning check valve allows backpressure into the air injection lines, creating unstable pressure readings at the sensor.
- 4
Corroded or loose connector/wiring
Poor electrical connections at the sensor, pump, or solenoid valve cause intermittent signal loss or noise that mimics sensor failure.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Faulty air pressure sensor — The secondary air pressure sensor on Bank 2 is sending intermittent or erratic signal readings to the PCM, causing the system to appear dysfunctional even if airflow is normal.
- 2
Check Defective secondary air injection pump — The air pump is failing intermittently, causing inconsistent airflow that the sensor detects as erratic pressure fluctuations.
- 3
Check Faulty one-way check valve — A stuck or malfunctioning check valve allows backpressure into the air injection lines, creating unstable pressure readings at the sensor.
- 4
Check Corroded or loose connector/wiring — Poor electrical connections at the sensor, pump, or solenoid valve cause intermittent signal loss or noise that mimics sensor failure.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace secondary air pressure sensor Bank 2
Locate and remove the air pressure sensor on Bank 2 of the secondary air injection system, then install a new OEM or quality replacement sensor and clear the code.
- 2
Inspect and repair electrical connections
Check the wiring harness and connectors leading to the pressure sensor, air pump, and solenoid valve for corrosion, looseness, or damage. Clean corroded connectors with electrical contact cleaner or replace damaged wiring.
- 3
Replace secondary air injection pump
If the pump is failing intermittently, remove the mounting bolts and disconnect hoses/wiring, then install a new air injection pump and reconnect all fittings securely.
- 4
Replace secondary air control solenoid valve
If the solenoid valve is sticking or leaking, remove the electrical connector and mounting bolts, then install a replacement solenoid and reconnect the air hoses and wiring.
