Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor C Circuit No Signal
The transmission control module is not receiving a signal from the intermediate shaft speed sensor (also called transmission speed sensor C). This sensor monitors transmission shaft speed and is critical for proper gear shifting and transmission control. Without this signal, the transmission cannot optimize shift timing and quality.
What You Might Notice
- Hard or harsh shifting between gears
- Erratic engine speed or rpm fluctuations
- Multiple warning lights on dashboard
- Poor overall driveability and acceleration
- Transmission may default to safe mode with limited gear selection
Most Common Causes
- 1
Defective intermediate shaft speed sensor
The sensor itself has failed and cannot generate a signal. This is the most common cause and requires sensor replacement.
- 2
Wiring or connector damage
The electrical harness between the sensor and transmission control module is damaged, corroded, or disconnected. Inspect for broken wires, loose connectors, or water damage.
- 3
Low or dirty automatic transmission fluid
Contaminated or insufficient ATF can cause sensor malfunction and poor transmission operation. Check fluid level and condition.
- 4
Internal ECM or TCM malfunction
The transmission control module itself may have failed or have corrupted programming, preventing it from receiving or processing the sensor signal.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Defective intermediate shaft speed sensor — The sensor itself has failed and cannot generate a signal. This is the most common cause and requires sensor replacement.
- 2
Check Wiring or connector damage — The electrical harness between the sensor and transmission control module is damaged, corroded, or disconnected. Inspect for broken wires, loose connectors, or water damage.
- 3
Check Low or dirty automatic transmission fluid — Contaminated or insufficient ATF can cause sensor malfunction and poor transmission operation. Check fluid level and condition.
- 4
Check Internal ECM or TCM malfunction — The transmission control module itself may have failed or have corrupted programming, preventing it from receiving or processing the sensor signal.
How to Fix It
- 1
Replace intermediate shaft speed sensor
Locate the intermediate shaft speed sensor on the transmission, disconnect the wiring harness, and remove the sensor. Install a new OEM or quality replacement sensor and reconnect the electrical connector. Clear the fault code and test drive.
- 2
Inspect and repair wiring harness
Check the wiring between the speed sensor and transmission control module for breaks, corrosion, or loose connections. Repair or replace damaged sections of the harness and ensure all connectors are seated properly.
- 3
Change transmission fluid and filter
Drain the old automatic transmission fluid and replace with fresh fluid meeting your vehicle's specifications. Replace the transmission filter at the same time. Dirty or low fluid can cause sensor signal issues.
- 4
Test or replace transmission control module
If other fixes fail, the TCM itself may be faulty. Have the TCM tested by a transmission specialist or dealer. If defective, it may require reprogramming or replacement.
