Pressure Control Solenoid "J" Control Circuit/Open
Code P2824 indicates the transmission control solenoid J circuit is open or not responding to the PCM's commands. This solenoid controls transmission fluid pressure and shift timing, so a failure prevents proper gear engagement and transmission operation.
What You Might Notice
- Check Engine Light activated
- Transmission slips when shifting
- Transmission shifts hard or bangs into gear
- Increased fuel consumption
- Transmission overheating
Most Common Causes
- 1
Open or broken solenoid J wiring
Damaged, corroded, or disconnected wiring to solenoid J prevents electrical signal from reaching the solenoid. Check connectors and harness for corrosion or physical damage.
- 2
Faulty pressure control solenoid J
The solenoid valve itself has failed internally or the coil winding is open. The solenoid cannot be repaired and requires replacement.
- 3
Transmission control module (TCM) failure
The TCM is not sending proper signals to solenoid J due to internal module failure. This requires TCM reprogramming or replacement.
- 4
Low or dirty transmission fluid
Insufficient fluid level or contaminated fluid can cause solenoid response issues. Check fluid level and condition; perform fluid change if needed.
How to Diagnose It
- 1
Check Open or broken solenoid J wiring — Damaged, corroded, or disconnected wiring to solenoid J prevents electrical signal from reaching the solenoid. Check connectors and harness for corrosion or physical damage.
- 2
Check Faulty pressure control solenoid J — The solenoid valve itself has failed internally or the coil winding is open. The solenoid cannot be repaired and requires replacement.
- 3
Check Transmission control module (TCM) failure — The TCM is not sending proper signals to solenoid J due to internal module failure. This requires TCM reprogramming or replacement.
- 4
Check Low or dirty transmission fluid — Insufficient fluid level or contaminated fluid can cause solenoid response issues. Check fluid level and condition; perform fluid change if needed.
How to Fix It
- 1
Inspect and repair solenoid J wiring
Locate the solenoid J connector and harness. Check for corrosion, loose connections, or damaged wires. Clean connectors with electrical contact cleaner or repair/replace damaged wiring as needed.
- 2
Replace pressure control solenoid J
Remove the transmission pan, locate solenoid J, disconnect the electrical connector and mounting bolts, and install a new solenoid. Refill transmission fluid to proper level.
- 3
Check and reprogram transmission control module
Scan the TCM for internal faults and reprogram or update the module software. If TCM is defective and cannot be repaired, replacement may be necessary.
- 4
Service transmission fluid and filter
Drain old transmission fluid, replace the filter, and refill with manufacturer-specified fluid type. Low or dirty fluid can cause solenoid malfunction.
