HVAC Smell Diagnosis
Monitor
Unusual smells from the heating and air conditioning vents can come from several sources. A musty or sour smell — especially when the AC first turns on — is almost always mold or bacteria growing on the evaporator coil or inside the HVAC housing. A sweet smell suggests coolant from a heater core leak. A chemical smell may be refrigerant. A burnt smell from the vents can be a blower motor issue, burning dust on the heater core, or a wiring problem.
Monitor closely — watch for other symptoms developing.
Check These First
Before diving into diagnosis, quickly verify these:
- 1Note the exact type of smell: musty or earthy, sweet, chemical or sharp, or burnt.
- 2Note whether the smell fades after a few minutes of running the system, or is constant.
- 3Check when the cabin air filter was last replaced — an overdue filter traps organic material and grows mold.
- 4Set the blower to fresh air mode and compare the smell to recirculation mode — a musty smell worse on recirculation points to evaporator mold.
- 5If the smell is sweet, check the coolant reservoir level — a heater core leak can introduce coolant smell into the cabin.
