Starting System Diagnosis
Hub for no-crank, no-click, clicking, and cranks-but-won't-fire problems. It separates battery/starter issues from fuel, spark, sensor, and security issues.
Check These First
Before diving into diagnosis, quickly verify these:
- 1Check whether dash lights come on.
- 2Listen for rapid clicking, one click, or normal cranking.
- 3Try the headlights to judge battery strength.
- 4Scan for codes if it cranks but will not fire.
What exactly is it doing?

Engine Cranks But Won't Fire
Fix SoonCranking but not firing means the starter is spinning the engine, but the engine is missing fuel, spark, compression, correct timing, or security authorization. This is different from a no-crank problem, so do not start by replacing the starter.
See causes →No Crank At All
Fix SoonNo crank at all means the starter is not turning the engine. The cause may be a weak battery, loose terminals, bad ground, starter relay/fuse, neutral safety switch, ignition switch, security issue, or bad starter.
See causes →No Crank or Click at All
Fix SoonNo crank and no click means the starter solenoid may not be receiving power or the vehicle is not allowing a crank request. Common causes include a dead battery, bad terminal connection, starter relay/fuse issue, ignition switch/start button problem, neutral safety switch, security system, or broken ground.
